First thoughts

poisonpoison Posts: 8Common Alpha Backer, Space Dog
I figured I'd do a summary of my thoughts and reactions to the first few hours of my play. I'll separate the post into five sections, the intro section (this), what I consider pros, cons, other thoughts, and summary.

Pros
  • +Game starts right up; no long load time, even when installed on a HDD.
  • +Looks, sounds, and feels beautiful on Epic (haven't played on anything else).
  • +First sector cleared, second is looking entirely different (good variety should reduce monotony).
  • +Good controller/mouse support. I have played finished games before that don't work nearly as well as this; when alt-tabbing or switching monitors, there isn't any issue when you resume play. The mouse disappears as it should, and buttons pressed on the game pad override any mouse input. Flawless.
Cons
  • -My resolution on my primary monitor is 1920x1080. The game correctly detected it, but was windowed anyway. When I toggled window mode off, the program bugged out and would not display; it tried to go fullscreen, sound would play, I'd see a black screen for a fraction of a second, and it would then minimize. I had to close the program and re-launch before it correctly displayed in fullscreen.
  • -Game does not offer customized video/audio settings (just low, medium, high, and epic video, and a toggle for music) -- I'm assuming this will come later.
  • -I have both video recording and screenshot capture through Dxtory, and only movie capture works (an Everspace-only problem).
  • -Unless you've picked it up or crafted it before, there doesn't seem to be any way to get an idea of how effective an item is. Essentially, you have no way of knowing before you scrap something if it is better than what you're replacing...
Other Thoughts
  • »Black hole in sector 2! I haven't browsed the forums much, so I was surprised to see the black hole. I was even more surprised when it began to suck me in, with no warning. I escaped, and the average player should realize a black hole will suck you in, but no HUD warning surprised me a little.
  • »At this point, I have no idea what (if any) purpose challenges serve. However, once I die I assume the three I've completed this run will reset and give some sort of reward. This is not the case. They reset, but they give no reward that I've seen
  • »Gameplay itself gets stale. I've played for near 5 hours, and I've gotten burnt out for today. I know that this is partially due to the rogue-like nature of the game, and partially the lack of content that is a result of the Alpha stage of the game, so I don't consider it a con at this point. Missions would be a nice touch, or some sort of faction-related perk that carries from area to area within a sector...
Overall, I'd say it's a very polished Alpha. Little to complain about, performs better than expected, and lacks content -- as Alphas do. I'm very excited to see where this game goes!

Concerning your last Con: If you click on the name it should give you stats on the right side. If you click the plus it will just upgrade it. Although, I think if they included some kind of + and - system to show you how much you're gaining or losing.

Edit: I'm liking this game and agree with your first thoughts.

I played for about 1.5 hours, 2 runs, and made it to the second system system. My biggest frustration was lack of resources to do anything and running out of scanning probes, at which point it's pretty much impossible to find any containers or anything besides minable asteroids.

What's the intended gameplay time required to gather components for crafting? Do you intend for people to gather most crafting materials by killing enemy ships? I had some difficulty with combat because I was playing on my PC from a Mac (with a severe lack of ability to control mouse acceleration) thru Steam in-home streaming so I avoided combat unless necessary.

for me, it's very different, i don't like so much the KB+M controls, and i got little motion sickness, so my first experience is not as good as i have would., but it's just an (early) alpha

But yes the graphics looks beautifull and impressive.

About the con: I use a gamepad so that functionality isn't there. However it does highlight one of the pros, that I can switch rapidly and easily between keyboard and gamepad input.

    Thanks for the feedback!

I stayed in a system until I had to leave due to interceptors. That's an "other thought" I had forgotten to mention, and I'll update the post with that **see edit**. However, the first few runs you're supposed to die quick and hard, congrats on lasting 1.5 hours in 2 runs (my first was 13 minutes).

Essentially, I had little resource problems. I would fly to where I saw fighting/enemies I could take (and on occasion ones I could not; elite chiefs had to be pulled away from their underlings), and that worked for me well into the 4th sector. I also didn't use scanning probes; my tactics were to play vulture, then collect any nearby resources. I wasn't above hacking communications arrays though.

Naturally generated resources do seem to become more abundant, aside from mining areas, after the 2nd sector. Before then it seems like the best thing to do was clean up fights, repair, grab any easily gained resources, then jump to the next area. As for a pacifist approach, I don't know how viable that really is. Chances are there will be considerable tweaking, so it may become viable later.

Motion sickness is something I can sympathize with. My girlfriend can't play first person games at all with it, and she has a hard time even with third person sometimes. The main thing she does is she plays for as long as she can, then takes a break. You may also want to try running in a smaller window, that helps her as well.

I cant comment on keyboard/mouse ease of use; the only time I used it was to test out how easy it is to switch from KB/M to gamepad in the menu and several times in game (not including when I moused over to the OP as I was writing). You may want to invest in a gamepad, if possible.

    EDIT:
**When I said that I would update the OP, I was not aware you can only edit for 1 hour after the post was made. Below is my "other thought", along with a suggestion.**

I don't know if a second wave of interceptors comes through later or not, but I'd like the extra time to get to at least view the scenery. There is ample time to collect resources, and I understand the desire to push the player out of a zone they've had plenty of time to clear, but they should at least be able to be beaten. An idea to alleviate this could be to make them weak enough to be beaten (but still considerably stronger than the ships in the area), and have a second wave of capital ships and escorts come at a timer that is 150% of the timer for the first wave (so at 10 minutes after entering the zone, the first wave comes, then 15 after entering the capital ships come).

They give you something else to do while playing your run, currently they also reward you with a small credit bonus when achieving them. We will make this more obvious in the future and maybe add other rewards, too.

We plan on displaying an item info box close to the pickups and the option to switch it with your currently selected equipment if you should not have any free slots.
